Working From Home

Designing Your Workspace

Creating a comfortable and inviting workspace is important. It doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming it just has to work for you. Make this space somewhere you enjoy spending time.

  1. Location
If you are working from home, having a dedicated space is a game-changer. This could be anywhere in your home. Maybe you have an entire room you can use or maybe it’s just a nook. Either way, make the most of it. Ensure you are near a window so that you can get natural light and fresh air. Have a section of wall space that you can use and, if possible, a door you can shut.
  2. Pick a desk
Choose or use something, that makes sense for what you do and how you work. This could be a table you repurpose, a thrift store find, or something you invest in. For example, I like a bigger desk so that I have plenty of space for printing, drawing, and connecting visually to my work.
  3. Organize
Start with the biggest or most important items like computers and printers and work backward to the least used items. When you set up your electronics, organize those cords. Make your space convenient. Keep the things you use the most, close by. Right-handed? Put your pencil holder on that side. Use some of your wall space for a corkboard and pin mood boards, to-do lists, and inspirational items to it. This will help free up room on your desk.

Remember, this is your space. Make it work for you by setting it up according to your needs, workflow, and habits.

  4. Decorate
What motivates, inspires, and relaxes you? What makes you smile? These are the things that you want to decorate your space with. It could be a couple of photos, a quote, a painting, and your favorite bobblehead. Add a little something natural. Maybe you have a cool-looking plant or a fishbowl. It can’t be all screens and paperwork. Add a little life to your workspace. Whatever speaks to you.

And remember, you will have tough days at the office even if it’s at home, so think about what you would want to see on one of those days too. Maybe you have a degree to hang up or a project that you are proud of. Something that reminds you of your accomplishments and motivates you to do great things.
